Timezones, an exhibition of works by three photographers, opens March 9 at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre with a reception from 5 to 7. The show features photos from Indonesia by Pam Nelson, from India by Tanya Canam and from New Brunswick by Brigitte Noel. Nelson’s photographs, People of the Kampung, present a series of environmental portraits taken on the island of Java, Indonesia. Nelson captured the simplicity and beauty of the Javanese people and their communities in the days surrounding the 2004 tsunami. Canam’s photographs were taken over two months in early 2005 during a trip to Rajasthan, India, the Land of Kings, historical home of warrior clans. “There I met a people who know about struggle. They fight everyday a battle for survival. Rajasthan is a land of harsh desert and great poverty and one where the gender gap in wealth and education is the widest in all of India. I focused my lens on women. The women in these images are majestic, standing strong despite heavy loads of work, climate and female social status which makes them often a burden or a commodity.” Noel’s images are of birds. “For me, bird watching is my lifetime ticket to the theater of nature. When you stop and take the time to observe, the birds are there to put on a show for you and it is that show that I capture with my camera. I want to share their performances with you so that you appreciate them as much as I do. The exhibition will run until mid-April. |
