I've always had a strong visual sense, which was encouraged and nurtured as I grew up by my aunt, the artist Lucy Jarvis.
Painting forces me to look more closely at the world around me; to really see what I am looking at. It's an absorbing process, completely divorced from the normal passage of time, of trying to make line, colour and form convey my impressions.
I feel the strength of painting - of all art - is its ability to open the viewer's eyes to see the world in a slightly different way, to be excited by colour, to marvel at beauty in the mundane, to see something as another person has percieved it.
It's how we share our visions with others and how we learn how others see.
